Chapter 23. Old Knees

“What the hell were we thinking Bill?” Walt said as he trudged up the path that the briars had opened for him.  Bill ignored him, spending his time instead putting one foot in front of the other.  At least the briars had given them a way to the top that was a lot easier than most ways, Walt had learned his lessons years ago when he was short with the briars and was sent straight up the steep eastern slope of the hill.  This time, when Walt was asking the briars about what they were thinking about doing and asking for a way to the top, he was as polite as he could be, knowing full well that the briars had ways of extracting their revenge if they even felt a bit slighted.
